Undergraduate 

ELAs within in-person composition courses assist students with all phases of written assignments (from invention to drafting to revising), and they also support student success through outreach (checking in with students and making sure students understand course content, LMS navigation, and assignments). ELAs receive mentorship from the instructor and the ELA initiative point-person. ELAs gain experience in writing tutoring and student mentoring, equipping them with valued skills for the humanities, leadership, and education.  

Requirements 

  • Attend a pre-term orientation/training 

  • Meet with the instructor before the start of term 

  • Attend the first or second day of class; attend additional class sessions as advised by the instructor 

  • Attend monthly/bimonthly mentorship sessions/check-ins with the instructor (1 meeting for September; 2 meetings each month for October-December) Attend two sessions with the ELA point person over the course of the semester 

  • Read the course materials and assignments; understand the LMS layout 

  • Reach out to students via email, especially students who are struggling, and offer support  

  • Keep accurate records of student interactions  

  • Organize individual or small group meetings with students, especially students who are struggling, in person or over Zoom 

  • Attend and/or lead peer review sessions or in-class workshopping sessions throughout the term  

  • Comply with policies and procedures of the Department and the College including but not limited to the College’s Code of Conduct and maintain students’ information confidentiality.
