STEM Achievers at Mercy University addresses barriers to digital inclusion by providing the benefits of technology, connectivity, and hands-on learning opportunities to middle and high school students in underserved schools and communities, to help them thrive in the digital age. Mercy University Center for STEM Education (MCSE) is partnering with NACCE to host a summer learning initiative for middle school students, weekdays 9:00am-3:00pm from July 13-August 24. We are seeking current K-12 TAs, graduate students or upper level undergraduates in STEM subjects to be Teaching Assistants in this exciting partnership to present the STEM Achievers at Mercy University Summer Program to 65 middle school students on Mercy University’s Bronx campusThere will be an on-site program director and four teachers on campus. Five Teaching Assistants will support instructors to help students in the STEM Achievers Curriculum which includes hands-on instruction in 3D Printing, Augmented Reality, Design Thinking and Social Entrepreneurship. Instructors and Teaching Assistants will also be encouraged to supplement Camp Curriculum with STEM-focused activities using resources and experiences available on campus or through off-campus field trips (Mercy College will coordinate any field trips but we invite suggestions). The learning day will have two hours of classroom instruction both in the morning and afternoon, as well as whole-group activities, lunch, and recreation activities. Teaching Assistants will be expected to help oversee common whole group and recreational activities. As part of the application, we ask the teaching assistants to propose one recreational activity that they can lead one day a week. Lunch is provided. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone in the fields of STEM or Education to work with certified secondary teachers teaching using innovative technology resources.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Active Recreation Support: Actively engage with students during daily recreation periods, including participating in and supervising outdoor sports and games at the baseball field.

  • Student Wellbeing: Foster a positive and inclusive environment by "playing in" during activities to build rapport and ensure all students are participating safely and enthusiastically. 

Physical Engagement:

  • Ability and willingness to lead and participate in outdoor physical activities (such as baseball or field games) in various weather conditions.

Safety Mindset:

  • Proactive supervision skills to ensure student safety and fair play during high-energy recreational sessions.

Education Requirements:

  • Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program with interested in STEM and/or Education.
