Position Description:

The Department of Secondary Education at Mercy University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position for the 2026–2027 academic year. We are seeking a collaborative, student-centered educator who brings both teaching expertise and leadership ability. The successful candidate will contribute to high-quality instruction with a particular focus on supporting the organization, communication, and continuous improvement of our undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation programs. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Primary Responsibilities:

Teaching:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in secondary education, including instructional methods, foundations, and curriculum design
  • Advise and mentor students across stages of the teacher preparation process
  • Contribute to curriculum development, program assessment, and departmental initiatives
  • Maintain a commitment to culturally responsive, inclusive, and evidence-based instruction
  • Participate actively in school, university, and professional service

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in Secondary Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field
  • Ability to serve as the social studies education content area specialist for the department
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence, organizational, and communication skills
  • Familiarity with teacher certification standards and state education requirements, particularly in New York
  • Commitment to equity, access, and culturally responsive education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in higher education
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience in grades 7-12 settings
  • Knowledge of accreditation processes (e.g., CAEP) and assessment practices
