Job Summary:

The Learning Support Facilitator provides tutoring and academic support to undergraduate and graduate students. In his/her sessions, he/she fosters intellectual growth to help students become independent learners. May also conduct workshops in a variety of formats, sizes, and topics, including discipline specific reviews, study skills and time management, as well as basic computer skills. In this role, he/she encourages student success through engagement with a variety of academic resources and also act as mentors to Peer Tutors.

 A. Administrative/Technical/Service

 

  • Provide high-quality individual and small group tutoring sessions in approved subjects.
  • Facilitate learning to assist the student to become a successful, independent learner.
  • Facilitate student mastery of concepts or applications of a specific course of study as presented by the course instructor.
  • Integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.
  • Assist coordinator with Peer Tutor training activities and tutee workshops, as may be needed.
  • Discuss with supervisor and/or site coordinator when potential referrals to other appropriate university resources may be needed. Example: Office of ACCESSibility.
  • Encourage students to develop a systematic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses.
  • Meet with Learning Support Manager and CAEI administrative staff to plan appropriate academic support for students.
  • Record student data to the CAEI with accuracy and confidentiality, and turn in such data at the conclusion of every shift.
  • Accurately log work hours on Banner time sheets in Mercy Connect and submit them on time.
  • Participate in professional development offerings.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

 

B. Organizational/Managerial

  • Initiates actions that foster acceptance of organizational change and that build commitment to Department and university’s objectives.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in all aspects of his/her work, and shows a commitment to work through proper channels to resolve any difficult situations in the work place.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in the acceptance and completion of work assignments.
  • Service Orientation: Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude toward all members of the Mercy University community.

  • Demonstrates a high level of written and oral communication with students, supervisors, peers, and all members of the university community.
  • Maintains ongoing professional communication with supervisor as a member of the CAEI team.
  • Answers telephones and emails professionally and appropriately, resolving problems in a timely manner with proper documentation.
  1. Policies and Procedures Compliance:
  • Complies with Department and University policies and procedures, including the University’s Code of Conduct.
  • Identifies and reports gaps in policies and procedures to management.
  • Complies with all required training.
  • A Learning Support Specialist employed by Mercy University in another capacity cannot work at the CAEI during overlapping times and should only perform tasks related to the CAEI position while on duty.

 

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to work collegially with diverse personnel
  • Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, written and oral communication, problem-solving, organizational, and presentation skills
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office, Outlook, Banner, Blackboard, Compass and Internet
  • Demonstrated evidence of detail-orientation, customer service orientation, ability to work independently, high attention to detail
  • Ability to travel between locations preferred

Education Requirements:

  • Level One: Bachelors Degree from an accredited four-year college or university required
  • Level Two: Masters Degree from an accredited four-year college or university required
