Job Summary:

Mercy University seeks a dynamic and energetic individual to join our team at the Dobbs Ferry Campus as an Associate Director of Recreation and Intramurals.  The Associate Director of Recreation and Intramurals is primarily responsible for organizing, administering and growing opportunities for daily recreation, intramural and other organized sports, and fitness training for Mercy University students.  It provides daily oversight to all of Mercy’s common recreation areas and services, including the Fitness Center. The position is also responsible for administering and growing Mercy University's Club Sports programs, ensuring they are functioning within national best practice guidelines, and overseeing training and compliance with the risk management policies within Student Life. This position reports to the Director of Student Life.

The ideal candidate will have a proven record of leading successful programs at the collegiate, high school, and/or non-profit level. The Associate Director must have strong leadership skills and an ability to effectively supervise staff and students.

The Associate Director will help support improvements in our Student Life offerings through recreation, health and well-being initiatives, and competitive sport. It will also play a leadership role in the planning and launch of the new state-of-the-art Field House coming in 2027.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver high quality recreation and intramural sports activities that encourage students to engage in new and creative activities.
  • Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for participants of all skill levels.
  • Serve as a resource and point of contact for student organizations related to recreation, including the formal Club Sports program.
  • Plan, organize, and administer intramural sports leagues, tournaments, and recreational programs for students.  Develop seasonal intramural sport schedules and manage registration processes.
  • Coordinate a variety of activities including team sports, individual sports, fitness programs, outdoor recreation trips, and special events.
  • Work creatively to establish new partnerships in collaboration with other campus departments interested in promoting the wellbeing of the students.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and mentor student employees including but not limited to desk staff and officials.  Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and development.
  • Create and manage staff schedules.
  • Enforce university and departmental policies, rules, and codes of conduct.  Ensure programs comply with Title IX, ADA, and other applicable regulations, and respond to and document incidents, injuries, and disciplinary matters.
  • Ensure all activities meet health and safety standards, maintain first aid certifications and emergency action plans, and conduct regular risk assessments for programs and facilities.
  • Track participation data and assess program outcomes to apply to future programming.
  • Manage sports and outdoor equipment inventory, including purchasing, maintenance, and storage.  Ensure that equipment is safe, functional, and properly allocated.
  • Directly oversee all fitness related programming and fitness facility operations including but not limited to: daily maintenance and facility upkeep, program design and delivery, special events, scheduling student personnel, policies and procedures, publicity and promotions, registration management, overseeing facility and space needs, purchase and inventory of equipment.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 3+ years of professional experience in a supervisory programmatic position in recreation or sports, including at least one year of staff supervision, preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of trends in collegiate recreation and intramural programming, and the best practices in the administration of those activities.
  • Experience in maintenance of fitness equipment and in managing fitness facilities.
  • CPR/First Aid Instructor Certification preferred.
  • Participation in professional organizations (such as NIRSA, AORE, etc) preferred.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required. 
  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education administration, kinesiology, or in related field preferred.
