Job Description

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) is seeking a highly motivated, self-starting professional to serve as an HEOP Counselor at our Manhattan campus. The HEOP Counselor provides comprehensive academic and personal advisement, supporting students’ successful transition to college and guiding them through to the completion of their degree. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive academic advising, including course selection, registration, and degree planning
  • Support the recruitment, screening, and interviewing of prospective HEOP students
  • Collect, verify, and maintain required eligibility and compliance documentation for students on assigned caseloads
  • Collaborate with program administrators to implement the HEOP Summer Program; establish early relationships with first-year students and assess academic needs
  • Promote student retention and timely graduation through targeted academic and personal support strategies
  • Assist students in successfully transitioning to college by developing skills in time management, study strategies, preparedness, and self-advocacy
  • Educate students on financial aid requirements and obligations; work closely with the Associate Director and the Financial Aid Office to ensure timely processing of documentation
  • Accurately document all student interactions in COMPASS and BANNER; prepare interim and final reports for New York State
  • Monitor student academic progress by maintaining regular contact with students and consulting with faculty as needed
  • Maintain accurate, confidential student records in compliance with institutional and state guidelines
  • Utilize institutional systems and software including Banner, EAB, ARGOS, SLATE, Xtender, Degree Works, and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint; Access preferred)
  • Demonstrate strong written communication skills
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of individualized student success plans
  • Empower students to independently monitor academic progress and effectively plan their course of study
  • Integrate academic advisement with career development services and connect students with faculty within their academic majors
  • Coordinate tutoring services through the Learning Center and HEOP tutors across Dobbs Ferry, Bronx, and Manhattan campuses
  • Provide intensive support to students on academic probation, including regular meetings, development of action plans, monitoring tutoring and attendance, and preparation of weekly progress reports
  • Meet weekly with first-year students during the first semester and biweekly during the second semester
  • Attend Opportunity Program Department and HEOP staff meetings; represent HEOP at conferences, student activities, and campus events, primarily at the Manhattan campus
  • Participate in college meetings and serve on committees addressing student success and equity initiatives
  • Support students with personal challenges and make appropriate referrals to licensed professionals when necessary
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators
  • Exhibit initiative, professionalism, and the ability to work independently with a high level of responsibility
  • Travel between campuses as required and maintain flexibility to work evenings and weekends
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, education, or a related field, or equivalent experience working with economically and academically disadvantaged students required
  • Master’s degree preferred
